The First Visit

Our office, along with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Academy of Pediatrics, recommend the first dental examination by 12 months of age. Many problems which might otherwise develop can be prevented. During the initial visit, our staff and the doctor will review the health history form with you. Your child will be introduced to our dental team and allowed time to see the office and to become comfortable before the examination. We invite you to stay with your child during the initial examination.
The first visit for toddlers may be a gentle examination of the teeth and mouth with a thorough cleaning and fluoride treatment performed. If possible, we take only those x-rays necessary for a complete diagnosis of your childs dental health. After a thorough study of our findings, we will prepare a treatment plan for your childs dental needs, and you will be given an estimate of cost. Although no restorative treatment is performed at the first appointment, emergency treatment may be rendered.
Upon completion of all diagnosed treatment, your child will be scheduled in our preventive recare system. Preventive examinations may be scheduled every four to six months depending on your childs individual needs. You will receive a postcard prior to each recare appointment as a reminder. Preventive services like regular examinations, cleanings, fluoride treatments, and sealants are less costly than other treatments that may be necessary if the teeth are neglected.
We offer treatment alternatives for special children including conscious sedation in our office. In case of extensive dental needs, treatment may be performed under general anesthesia at Childrens Hospital of the Kings Daughters.

Treatment Management Options
Most children are calm, comfortable and confident in a pediatric dental office. Sometimes, however, a child feels anxious during treatment. Your child may need more support than just a gentle, caring manner to feel comfortable. Click HERE to review various forms of Treatment Management Options available at Pediatric Dentistry.

Thumb and Finger Sucking
Sucking is an important part of facial muscle development, so it is important not to take the bottle away too early. To avoid baby bottle tooth decay, dont give bottles at naps or bedtime. By the time the baby reaches the age of one, you may be weaning him/her off the bottle and encouraging your child to drink from a cup. Download a helpful chart to track the progress of your child in breaking the habit: CLICK HERE (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader).
