What’s the Fuss? Why Baby Those Baby Teeth?

Pediatric dentists will tell you the comment they hear most often from parents is, “They are only baby teeth. They are going to fall out anyway. Why do we have to fix them?”

Many parents don’t consider baby teeth important because adult teeth eventually replace them. However, primary (baby) teeth play an important role in guiding adult teeth into position. The key is to make certain baby teeth serve the child until permanent teeth are all in place.

Healthy baby teeth also play an important role in developing self-esteem and social skills. Decay, once started, can spread rapidly in children’s teeth causing them to be extra-sensitive to hot and cold. That can affect the child’s nutrition and/or disposition. When baby teeth must be pulled out because of decay, it can hinder the child’s speech and his/her ability to swallow. Also, the space left for the permanent teeth may need to be recreated by orthodontics.
